wss logoWaikiki Sailing School offer various sailing classes all with the American Sailing Association (ASA) stamp of approval. For your safety and improved experience on the water any charter may include Basic Keelboat instruction. If you've already earned your Basic Keelboat credentials, check out some of our other course offerings below.

All prices include a USCG certified captain and ASA testing costs. Provisioning for overnight and extended passages is not included. However, provisioning can be customized to you and your crew’s desire.

GET YOUR FEET WET SAILING
4-Hour Introduction

Haven’t left the dock before? Get out of the harbor and find out if sailing is everything you’ve dreamt it would be. Our experienced captain will welcome you aboard one of our yachts. We’ll let you raise and trim the sails, take the helm, tack and jibe. We offer this introductory sail year-round. This sail may include the ASA booklet: Sailing Made Easy.

BASIC KEELBOAT (ASA 101)
1 or 2-Days

Course may be completed in one day with prior sailing experience

Prerequisites: None

General Description: Students must sail a fixed keel sailboat of at least 20-feet in length in moderate wind and sea conditions. No navigations skills are required for the course and there are no prerequisites necessary.

What you will learn: Sailing theory, Rules of the Road, boat safety procedures, knot tying and sailing terminology.

Additional Information: This course is taught aboard a 20 to 30-foot sailboat and is offered as a private lesson for one or two people. You will be with the instructor, a United States Coast Guard (USGS) certified captain for one full day or two half days. At the end of the lesson you will be required to take a written ASA certification test.  Study materials include the ASA Sailing Fundamentals textbook and ASA log book. BASIC COASTAL CRUISING (ASA 103)

3-Day Course Can Be Combined with Basic Keelboat


Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing Certificate (ASA 101)

General Description: Students must cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary powered sailboat of approximately 20 to 30 feet in length, in moderate wind and sea conditions.

What you will learn: Expanded boat terminology, harbor handling and anchoring skills, person-overboard recovery, and extra knot tying and line handling. 

Additional Information: Taught on our Ranger 33 this course is designed to build your confidence on the water and increase your boat handling skills. This course can be offered as part of our three, five or seven day, Cruise and Learn packages. Cruise and Learn allows clients to stay aboard the boat in any of the secure anchorages or marinas selected by your captain. The Cruise and Learn option is perfect for clients that would like to leave the crowds behind and take a few extra days on the water to expand their sailing skills and discover the real Hawaii. This course requires the ASA Sailing Fundamentals textbook and ASA log book. BAREBOAT CHARTERING (ASA 104)

Can Be Added to Cruise & Learn

Prerequisites: (ASA 101 and ASA 103) or Basic Keelboat Sailing & Basic Coastal Cruising Certificates

General Description: An advanced cruising course for individuals with prior cruising experience. Sailors must act as skipper and/or crew on a 30 to 50 foot sailboat by day in coastal waters.

What you will learn: The course will focus on deepening your knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures.  

Additional Information:
This course is taught on either the Ranger 33 or Nordic 44, both blue-water cruisers. You will learn cruise planning, provisioning, mechanical and electrical systems, advanced anchoring, additional experience in a variety of wind and sea conditions, and the joys of living aboard your own yacht. Make your vacation memorable as you gain hands-on sailing and cruising. The course is intended to prepare participants for bareboat chartering throughout the world. Once you’ve mastered the wind and sea conditions found around the Hawaiian archipelago, you will be ready to sail virtually anywhere else on our blue planet. This course utilizes the ASA Bareboat Charter textbook and ASA log book. COASTAL NAVIGATION (ASA 105)

Can Be Part of 7-Day Cruise & Learn

Prerequisites: None

General Description: Students must demonstrate their knowledge of navigational theory, i.e. chart symbols, terminology, USCG navigation rules, local rules and regulations, tides and currents, basic radio knowledge, etc., required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters.

What you will learn: Basic navigation tools and technologies for coastal piloting. 

Additional information: This course can be home study or classroom, but can also be done aboard one of our boats for hands on practice and learning as part of our 7-Day Cruise & Learn package.
